Now that you've learned a bit about the basic resume structure, let's dive into understanding how to put some of this advice into practice. Let's begin by focusing on one of the most basic yet important sections in the resume: the heading.

What do you put in a heading?

If you've never created a resume before, you may be wondering which pieces of information you should even include, and what it should look like as part of the resume.

Let's break down what makes for a good resume heading in the following example. Examine this section from the top of the resume below:

Here's what Jenny has done well in her heading:

  • Her name is in larger text and very visible. For the resume, your name should be the most noticeable information on the page.
  • She included all necessary contact information and relevant online profiles. Recruiters and employers need the contact information in order to know how they can get in touch with you. It's also important to include (and hyperlink) any online profiles so that they can easily find and evaluate your personal portfolio(s).
  • The heading is **well formatted. ** Jenny's heading has been specifically formatted so that all of the necessary information is clearly conveyed and makes efficient use of the horizontal space on the page.
